This painting sat unnamed in a closet for a few months. Then, after completing my “11pm” painting, the decision to name this one “3am” made too much sense. This scene comes after the 11pm porch beers, after you probably should’ve already called it a night, after almost everyone has crashed on the floors and couches and whatever surfaces seemed comfy enough at the friend’s place. This is the scene where you and one remaining house-party goer have ventured down the road on foot, with only your cell phone flash lights, to stumble upon an overgrown field and a (maybe) abandoned farm house. With a near empty tall boy in hand, the night feels calm now. It feels risky, chilly, a little scary, but peaceful. All those losers sleeping on the floor are missing out.
